Chris Billam-Smith vs Brandon Glanton Fight Preview

‘CBS’ risked it all in November, putting his WBO championship on the line against ferocious WBA kingpin Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez. It was a tremendous battle in Riyadh, with punches and blood flowing readily as the pair tore into each other with a punch output more akin to the lightweight division.

Billam-Smith lost the decision but emerged with plenty of credit for a battle-ready performance. But now he adjusts to life without the world championship belt he worked so hard for.

‘The Gentleman’ won the WBO gold with a majority decision over champion Lawrence Okolie. Defences against Mateusz Masternak and Richard Riakporhe, the latter avenging his only career defeat, strengthened Billam-Smith’s position. But ‘Zurdo’ took the title and put the affable Bournemouth man on the road to redemption.

Billam-Smith was clear that after the Ramirez defeat, he did not want a soft-touch. Many fighters bounce back from defeat with a confidence builder against a journeyman foe. But Billam-Smith takes on an opponent who is ranked in almost every world top 10 and a brace of world top-fives.

Glanton is a testament to the power of recovery. He lost a split decision to David Light, with his opponent springboarding into a world title fight with Okolie. This near-miss was exacerbated when Glanton dropped a majority decision in his next outing, to 3-0 Russian Soslan Asbarov.

Glanton has rebuilt his career after these setbacks, stringing together three stoppage wins. ‘Bulletproof’ scored two of those wins on the road, knocking out Emil Markic in France and Aleksei Egorov in Russia.

Chris Billam-Smith vs Brandon Glanton - Bout Winner (3-Way) Chris Billam-Smith

Odds correct at time of publishing.

Fighting in Billam-Smith’s home country will certainly do little to faze Glanton. But the barrage of punches-in-bunches that ‘CBS’ is capable of should worry the Atlanta man. When Billam-smith gets the momentum behind him, he is hard to control. Fight management is difficult when your opponent is throwing constant, hard shots.

‘Zurdo’ realised that the only way out was to go through. The Mexican threw more punches than Billam-Smith and with more accuracy. Despite having fought at light heavyweight not long ago, Ramirez was not against the idea of bullying the Brit. It did little to deter Billam-Smith, mind. But it does seem like the way to beat ‘The Gentleman’ is by trying to match punches with him.

This is not just Billam-Smith’s big opportunity to get back to the top. Glanton is similarly well-placed for a crack at one of the titles. Truthfully, the winner of this fight is likely to fight for a world championship in the very near future. Everything to play for in the capital this Saturday.

Chris Billam-Smith vs Brandon Glanton Prediction

I don’t think Glanton’s experience can match that of Billam-Smith. The latter has beaten some of the best around and is coming off giving the second-best cruiserweight on the planet a real tough fight.

Glanton does not have anything Billam-Smith has not seen before. I think the American is durable and will stay in there. ‘CBS’ has never been a concussive puncher, favouring volume over velocity. That should be enough to net him a points victory at 15/4.
