Carrington vs Castro Fight Preview
It is a coronation that has been on the cards. Ever since the COVID-inflicted delay to Tokyo 2020 saw Carrington swap his spot on the Olympic team for one in the pros, this moment has felt inevitable. Bruce fights for the belt. It was ever thus.
A penny for the thoughts of Carlos Castro, the unwilling fall guy in this proposed scenario. On one hand, the Mexican is a bit fortunate to get this title opportunity. He lost his last fight to former super bantamweight kingpin Stephen Fulton. On the other, Castro dropped ‘Cool Boy Steph’ in that fight and many though he should have got the decision.
No good deed goes unpunished and Castro’s reward for that star-making moment is the thankless task of pushing water uphill. It is that sort of dampening task that Carrington’s 16 previous opponents have undertaken to no avail.
The 28-year-old marries the slick, back-foot tendencies that a generation has nabbed from Floyd Mayweather with a deceptive, whipping shot-style that brings power through the brief trajectory of the punches. Nine of 16 opponents have fallen foul to the snap of those punches inside the distance. The other seven have spent the majority of their time in the ‘ShuShu’ orbit swiping at fresh air.
The one criticism you can level at Carrington, and plenty more American prospects, is that his level of opposition has been somewhat lacking. The WBC inexplicably permitted number-one contender Carrington to fight number 11 Mateus Heita for their interim belt last year. The Namibian had never boxed outside his home country nor had he previously appeared in the rankings until the Bruce fight was mooted. Curiouser and curiouser.
Carrington pitched a shut-out in that quasi-title affair. He’ll have a job on his hands trying to do the same with the grittier Castro. The Mexican is on the fringes of world class it has to be said. Aside from pushing Fulton close, his other elite opponents both beat him. Luis Nery out-scored Castro over 10 rounds while Brandon Figueroa finished him in six rounds.

Will it be fourth time lucky as Castro ventures into world class? He is certainly sturdier than the 16 men on Carrington’s list of victims. The current holder of that distinction is gatekeeper Sulaiman Segawa, who ran ‘ShuShu’ awfully close before losing a majority decision in September 2024. But Castro has greater experience at the top level than the rugged Segawa.
Castro has some decent wins on his ledger, including over well-travelled Colombian Belmar Preciado and former world title challenger Jesus Ruiz Garcia. Perhaps still a little shy of world title level, but he is still the best opponent Carrington has faced yet.
A pivotal fight for the two feathers. Carrington looks to make good on his promise while Castro attempts to grasp his last chance. It’s all to play for in NYC.

Carrington vs Castro Prediction
Carrington’s defensive flair and wicked counter-punches will need to be at their sharpest to overcome the rangy, persistent Castro. The Mexican is a pressure-fighter with a keen judgment of distance who looks to close down his foes.
On paper, that plays into Carrington’s hands as a back-foot fighter. But I can see Castro making things uncomfortable for the favourite before eventually succumbing. I’m taking Carrington to win on points at 5/6, but he will have a torrid time getting there.
