Cameron vs Jones Predictions: ‘Cannonball’ run or can Troy cause ‘Trouble’?

Liam Cameron looks to bounce back this Saturday, November 1 against Troy Jones. This 10-round contest takes place at the Co-op Live Arena in Manchester on the undercard of another big light heavyweight showdown; Joshua Buatsi vs Zach Parker. The event will be shown live on DAZN.

Cameron is priced at 11/10 while Jones is a slight favourite at 5/6. The draw is 12/1, indicating the close fight expected.

Saturday is a big night for Britain’s light heavyweight cohort. Buatsi and Parker will battle in a main event rich with world-level implications. The co-main event sees Bradley Rea defend the European 175lb title against veteran contender Lyndon Arthur. Then Cameron and Jones provide another tasty clash in which the victor will move up the ladder.

Earlier this year, Cameron’s stock was sky-high. The rough-and-ready Yorkshireman had given unbeaten Olympic silver medallist Ben Whittaker all he could handle in Riyadh in October 2024. ‘Cannonball’ was asking questions that the cocky prospect was struggling to answer, before the pair tumbled out of the ring clinching along the ropes. Whittaker was stretchered out injured after colliding with a ringside table. The scorecards rendered a sixth-round technical draw.

The prevailing opinion among cynical fans was that Whittaker had looked for a way out against an opponent he could not read or ruffle. Cameron’s stock rose in the aftermath and many thought he would finish the job in April of this year, as the rematch headlined the BP Pulse Arena in Birmingham.

What followed was no less controversial in the eyes of Whittaker’s doubters. In the second round, the precocious technician backed Cameron up in the corner and unleashed a barrage. Cameron was held up by the ropes and throwing nothing back when referee Howard Foster stepped in. The stoppage was criticised as arriving a little early. 

From my seat behind the ring post Cameron was slumped against, he looked finished, albeit without a true finishing shot from Whittaker exclamating the torture. Perhaps Foster could have given Liam a brief benefit of the doubt. However, I err on the side of caution when a fighter is helpless so had little issue with Cameron being saved from further punishment.

Cameron remains a respected fighter and a torrid proposition for any domestic opponent. The former Commonwealth middleweight champion gave the evening’s European title challenger, Lyndon Arthur, a rough ride back in June of last year. Some felt he did enough to beat ‘King’ Arthur, but ultimately the 35-year-old lost via a split decision.

Former English champion Jones stands in front of the wily veteran on Saturday night. The only blemish on the 27-year-old’s record is a points loss to unbeaten puncher Ezra Taylor. That reverse came back in May, with Jones hitting the comeback trail with a keep-busy six-round win over journeyman Bahadur Karami in August.

Cameron is wired differently to Taylor, with less pop in his shots than ‘The Cannon’. But one characteristic he shares with Jones’ last conqueror is a piercing and persistent jab. If Jones fails to show head movement and range control on Saturday, he could get pinned on the end of Cameron’s thudding left lead.

Saturday night will play out not only in individual contests but in broad narratives. The winners and losers of the evening’s big light heavyweight contests will be weaved into each other’s tales. Cameron and Jones have the chance to put themselves in the crosshairs of some of the top talent in not only the country, but the world.

Cameron vs Jones Prediction

Cameron has seen it all in his career and I don’t think there is anything in Jones’ history to suggest he can surprise Cameron, despite the fact he is the favourite.

This fight will hinge on what Cameron has left at 35. The Whittaker fights were emotionally and physically draining for various reasons. The Arthur fight was a tough one and ‘Cannonball’ has a long history of tough, punishing bouts.

With these men at their best, Cameron knows too much for Jones at this stage. If Liam is less than he was, maybe the younger man takes advantage. But I’m going for Cameron at 11/10.
