Callum Simpson vs Ivan Zucco Predictions: Oakwell Stadium hosts top European night

British and Commonwealth champion Callum Simpson looks for the hat-trick this Saturday June 7 as he faces Ivan Zucco for the vacant European super middleweight title. The bout takes place at Oakwell Stadium in Barnsley as the local lad returns to the venue, with capacity increased from the 7,000 he fought in front of last year increased to 16,000. Sky Sports will televise the event live with an undercard featuring the likes of star super welterweight Adam Azim and Simpson’s possible future rival, Mark Jeffers.
Here are my Callum Simpson vs Ivan Zucco predictions ahead of this title 12-rounder.

Home advantage and better previous opposition justifies Simpson’s 1/7 status. Zucco is 9/2 and you never know how good an unbeaten power puncher is until they meet someone who tests their boundaries. The draw is 20/1, not my favourite bet on the board considering these two like a tear-up and I think it finishes inside the distance.
Callum Simpson vs Ivan Zucco Fight Preview
“I know I’m gonna win it. How I’m going to win it, I’m not sure. But I’m prepared for 12 rounds of a tough fight. I’m prepared for the best Ivan Zucco to come. I’m confident in my ability, confident in my work.”
The words of Callum Simpson, speaking to me this week ahead of the biggest fight of his career so far. No braggodocio. No trash talk. Just the intense focus of a man looking to add the European championship to his British and Commonwealth belts. The traditional path that the Barnsley boy has taken is the platonic ideal for rising British boxers. Domestic stars like Lennox Lewis, Darren Barker and Chris Billam-Smith have captured the British, Commonwealth and European belts on their way to lifting world titles.
Not many fighters get to stadiums before those world honours are on the line. But that is a testament to the fanatical support Simpson has at home. Spending time in the town this week I got a real sense of how boxing-mad Barnsley has become. The local cinema had a message of good luck spelled out on the marquee, equal-billing with Tom Cruise’s latest installment of Mission Impossible. Pubs and shops all stared back at me with the visage of Simpson’s face and similar messages of support. Callum is unavoidable. Imagine walking around the town this week if you are Ivan Zucco.
The Italian does not give the air of a man who is phased. Good-natured and quiet, with a command of English that seems a little better than he lets on. Zucco has done most of his talking through a translator, appearing relaxed in his surroundings. Locals were posing for pictures with the man they were booing moments before, such is his approachable demeanour.
Zucco’s knockout record is less friendly than his attitude towards curious Yorkshire fight fans. 21 wins and 18 stoppages, all earned with a come-forward style in the southpaw stance. A lot of lefties try and make it awkward. Zucco tries to create warfare. British boxing aficionados got an idea of his approach when he hurt Germaine Brown several times before out-pointing him in 2023.

Simpson loves a scrap too. I asked the 28-year-old if this one might turn into a trade-off, which he took with his customary humour. “I’d rather have an easy fight, a nice early night! We’re not planning on going in there and having a war, we’re planning on trying to box. But everyone knows I do like to fight, I enjoy it and I’ll be ready for that. He’s got a good knockout record so I need to go in there and keep my head.”
Words that are easier to say in a Barnsley pub than to practice with 16,000 of your neighbours roaring you on. Simpson’s tendency to get involved has made for some cracking nights. Even a late-replacement assignment opposite then-unknown Elvis Ahorgah on the undercard of Adam Azim vs Sergey Lipinets led to a riotously-entertaining five-round throwdown.
With such an approach comes danger. But Simpson does have the talent to make this a boxing match. Zucco technically has more experience, with 76 professional rounds to Simpson’s 67. But Zucco’s record lacks quality names. The Brown win stands as the best, with the former English champion given a real chasing in that 10-rounder.
Most of his fights have been scheduled six-rounders. Luca Capuano had only ever fought over that distance when he lost his 11-0 record to Zucco in a scheduled 10 for the Italian championship. The only other fighter Zucco has beaten who has a notable record is Marko Nikolic, who was 28-1 until Zucco chinned him in two. You might recognise the Serbian from the three-round hiding Anthony Yarde gave him last year.
Meanwhile, Simpson’s pro career has involved four fewer fights, but the quality of opposition is superior to Zucco’s. A unanimous decision over Zak Chelli in this stadium last year launched Simpson into the mainstream boxing consciousness. That night Simpson took home the British and Commonwealth titles in front of an adoring crowd.
In his next fight, Callum crushed the usually-durable Steed Woodall. The Birmingham man is a respected road warrior who has just beaten Lerrone Richards, taking his unbeaten record. Some felt the stoppage was early when the ref waved it off as Simpson unloaded on Woodall in the second round. But the traffic was one-way.
Many expect the same on Saturday. They say Zucco is a tough customer but perhaps a little overmatched. I reject that view. A stadium fight creates world class expectations and Zucco is not at that level. But he is a quality and deserving challenger for the European crown.
For Simpson, the European title is a stop on the journey. As BOXXER Founder and CEO Ben Shalom told me this week; “We’re onto something with Callum. We see him snowballing in popularity. Things are going well, no need to rush it. I think he wins the European and then it is world level.” At the rate Simpson is going, and growing, you would not put it past the proud Barnsley lad.

Callum Simpson vs Ivan Zucco Prediction
I think, despite Simpson’s sensible proclamations, that this will be a bit of a scrap. The setting is ripe for such a fight. Zucco likes to throw, the Barnsley crowd will be baying for blood and I think Simpson answers the call.
Zucco has a better knockout ratio, but Simpson has stopped better men. I think if this turns into a knockdown-drag-out affair, the British kingpin can secure European glory. I like the look of our Price Boost for this one. Simpson to knock Zucco down in rounds 7-12 is up from 6/4 to 7/4. I’d jump at that as I think the middle rounds will see Simpson pull away.
As for the result, Simpson is 29/20 for the knockout any time. I like that price a lot. He will throw at some point and Zucco does not have experience in those deep waters. His only fight that has gone longer than six rounds was the Brown rout. Simpson is better than the gifted but light-hitting Londoner. I think Zucco will struggle to cope late in the fight and Simpson will score the KO.
