Buatsi vs Parker Fight Preview

This 10-rounder will decide the WBO international title, but there is more at stake here than a ranking belt. These two world class 175-pounders are laying it all on the line to impress in a busy division. Win and the talk turns to Dmitry Bivol and his belts. Lose and the division’s hungry young contenders will circle like hyenas.

Even in Britain, light heavyweight is stuffed to the gills. Beyond these two, there are another six UK fighters in at least one of the four major world ratings. Then there is Manchester’s co-main event, where former WBA title challenger Lyndon Arthur challenges for the European crown against Bradley Rea.

Which makes Saturday’s scrap pivotal for both men and for the wider division. For different reasons, each fighter might not find themselves back in a fight this big if they lose.

Buatsi is your classic crossroads fighter. At the age of 32, the Croydon boxer is far from finished but, you would assume, the end is in sight. How distant it sits on the horizon will be determined at the Co-op Arena. Buatsi can either emerge from Manchester reborn, like the brothers Gallagher and their globe-trotting Britpop concern. Or consigned to the misty-eyed past, like the faceless block of flats that occupies the vacated remains of the once-pivotal Hacienda.

Buatsi was on course to get a long-awaited world title shot when he hopped in the Riyadh ring with Callum Smith back in February. ‘Just Business’ walked in as the WBO interim champion, having outpointed strong Scottish contender Willy Hutchinson for that honour.

Buatsi was the 8/15 favourite in the build-up while Smith had only fought one keep-busy eight-rounder since he was stopped in seven rounds by Artur Beterbiev. As I wrote of the Scouser in my preview; “Times change and hurtful beatings at the hands of Canelo and Beterbiev have blunted that edge.” Dearest friend, I was wrong.

Buatsi and Smith contested a thrilling, instant classic of a war for the right to challenge the winner of the evening’s undisputed 175lb-title headliner between Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol.

Buatsi’s rise had an air of the path of least resistance, with Dan Azeez and Hutchinson the first foes who appeared upset-minded. But if you questioned JB’s heart coming into this fight, you could not question it after a savage 12 rounds of punishment swallowed and spat out by the gaping maws of each combatant. Smith would take the quasi-title and the points win. But oh, what majestic violence!

Parker knows what it is like to come within punching distance of an interim crown, namely the WBO super middleweight version. Agonisingly, after four hot-and-heavy rounds against John Ryder in 2022, ‘The Machine’ malfunctioned. With a shot at undisputed kingpin Saul Canelo Alvarez in the offing, Parker broke his hand. Unable to come out for the fifth round, the career-defining fight went to his opponent.

Ryder lost on points to Canelo the following May, while Parker was unable to return to action until November 2023. But it has been mostly good news since, with the 31-year-old winning four bouts with three stoppages. The Derbyshire boy had to climb off the canvas to win a decision over former WBA regular champion Tyron Zeuge, but there is nothing wrong with showing a little resilience.

Parker is the in-form fighter here, but comes in as the underdog. He has had less opportunities at world level and the one major such chance ended in painful circumstances, physically and spiritually.

Buatsi is the favourite and the seasoned world-level competitor. But he also has more miles on the clock. It is quantity over quality, with his 20 fights coming in tougher company than Parker’s 27.

It is an intoxicating brew. These fighters share many traits and, given their proximity in divisional terms, it is surprising they have not met before. This promises to be quite special.

Buatsi vs Parker Prediction

I toyed with the upset here. Parker is an awkward southpaw. A mover who can crouch under a guard or part one with the jab. A nightmare for the most orthodox of orthodox fighters, which is a category I would put Buatsi in.

But ‘Just Business’ delivered just that against the idiosyncratic Craig Richards, taking home a well-deserved decision. I don’t think you fluster this guy. There is power in those hooks, though he has not taken anyone out with them or any other punch in four years. Nevertheless, Buatsi can get up close and make even the most artisan opponent think twice with hard shots to head and body.

I reckon Buatsi times enough such raids to take home a points decision here. I think Parker will prove hard to pin down and a few rounds could be hard to score. The social media melts who think anything less than 120-108 for their favourite is a robbery might come out before the night is through. But I’m confident in Buatsi on points at 2/1.
