Brown vs Valera Fight Preview

Matchroom Boxing launched the career of Pat Brown in grand fashion. The godfather of British boxing journalism Steve Bunce was on the mic for a packed presser at Manchester’s grand Halle St Peter’s. Alongside the unveiling of Brown, Jamie Moore and Nigel Travis were made official as the Team GB Olympian’s trainers.

It felt like step one of a carefully-constructed plan. It was not quite Cus D’Amato, Bill Cayton and Jim Jacobs nurturing the barely-contained ferocity of Michael Gerard Tyson, but it was not a mile off.

One thing popular Pat and ‘Kid Dynamite’ have in common is frequent fights. While Brown is not fighting every three weeks like Mike, Matchroom have been keen to keep him ticking over. Valera will be the fifth outing of a professional career that only began in March.

The bouts have struck a nice balance too. Brown’s fanatical local support from his amateur days were satiated with a sold-out Altrincham show, which the debutant headlined with a fourth-round knockout of Federico Javier Grandone. Then came Croatia’s Ivan Duka, who had never been stopped earlier than the sixth round before Brown did him in two. That was in Birmingham, with Matchroom keen not to overexpose the attraction in Pat’s Manchester hometown.

He was back in familiar territory for 126 seconds of in-ring action in which he knocked out Lewis Oakford in July. The Brown barmy army got an away day in Belfast in September, as their boy finished Austine Nnamdi at Windsor Park.

Matchroom have moved their man well. After selling out Altrincham Ice Arena on his debut, which came on the heels of a standing-room only crowd at a press conference, many promoters would have only seen pound signs. But Brown is being given different experiences. Headline status, arena undercards, big stadium prelims. Active and varied, Brown’s first few months as a pro have been handled well.

America is the next phase of that. If the 25-year-old cruiserweight is to go all the way, and Eddie Hearn and the crew seem sure that he will, then the ‘Land of Opportunity’ will play a part in Pat’s future as well as his present.

Pat Brown has more than enough people with a stake in his future, so I will instead focus on that present. Valera is in the opposite corner for this one. However you slice this, ‘Mangu’ is a step up.

The Dominican boasts a 24-8, which is more wins than any of Brown’s previous victims have had fights. There is also a name that leaps out on Valera’s record. The veteran has gone the 12 round distance with current unified and lineal light heavyweight kingpin Dmitry Bivol. Valera was the first opponent to take the superb Russian the distance, losing his WBA interim 175-pound title to the future Hall of Famer in 2016.

There are other world level names on Valera’s record but, like Bivol, they did all defeat him. Sullivan Barrera and Maxim Vlasov outpointed him a few years back. Alexei Papin and Michal Cieslak both knocked Valera out.

Those stoppages are getting more frequent now as the once-durable Dominican ages. But Brown has never fought someone with this much valuable experience with top names under their belt. This is the biggest fight of Brown’s career, of that there is no question. Gut check time.

Brown vs Valera Prediction

Valera was a tough night for anybody during his light heavyweight years. Even his early cruiserweight outings showed he had retained his toughness. But three knockout losses in a four-fight span over 13 months has eroded any hope that Valera can still take a punch.

Brown will blast this guy out, but perhaps he will learn a thing or two along the way. Valera is a fine opponent for a fifth pro outing. Brown to win 1/14 is the shout.
