Andy Cruz vs Omar Salcido Gamez Betting Tips

  • Cruz to win @ 1/8

Andy Cruz vs Omar Salcido Gamez Odds

Cruz is your 1/8 favourite for this one, while his experienced foe is out at 5/1. You can take a punt on the draw at 16/1.

Fight Preview

Cruz is ranked by all four major world governing bodies despite having just his fifth pro fight here. Two of them have him in their top five while another has him sixth. So just how did a fighter with less than a handful of fights under his belt reach the cusp of world title opportunities?

Cruz has been matched tough. He needed to be. The Cuban amateur standout won three World Championships, two Pan American Games and an Olympic gold in the unpaid ranks. Kicking his heels against journeymen after turning over was never going to cut it.

Instead, Cruz has launched into his work by taking on fighters with top level experience. In his debut, Cruz beat former two-time title challenger Juan Carlos Burgos. Next up was a third-round knockout of ex-IBO champion Jovanni Straffon.

Brayan Rodriguez took world-ranked Angel Fierro to a split decision in 2023, but Cruz pitched a shutout against him five months later. Last time out, the decorated Cuban stopped Antonio Moran in seven rounds. The experienced Mexican had fought the likes of Devin Haney, Arnold Barboza and Jose Pedraza.

It has been a hard school for Cruz but so far he has been getting Straight A’s. Some categories could use improvement. Questions remain over his abilities as an inside fighter. But in this facet, Cruz is a victim of his own success. We speculate that he might not like to mix at close-quarters simply because his opponents so far have rarely closed the distance.

Andy Cruz vs Omar Salcido Gamez - Bout Winner (3-Way) Cruz to win

Odds correct at time of publishing.

Cruz is sometimes asked to fight the same uphill battle as other Cubans. That great boxing nation teaches a ruthlessly effective style of pure technique. Modern great Guillermo Rigondeaux had to field the same questions over a style that the uninitiated claimed was boring.

But for seasoned boxing watchers, there is something thrilling about the uncomfortable, forensic style of a skill-blessed Cuban fighter of the amateur college. Let the peanut gallery bay for blood. They do call it “sweet science” after all.

How likely is Salcido to provide an outlier of a result in Dr Cruz’s latest experiment? He has only lost one fight, against unbeaten prospect Jose Nunez. But Salcido was widely-outscored on the night against a fighter who has two draws on his ledger.

What Salcido can do is punch, with 14 of his 20 wins ending by knockout. Power will be the name of the game for the Mexican as he tries to disrupt the Olympian’s rhythm. A puncher’s chance serves the underdog well in these fights. Trying to outbox Cruz would be a fool’s errand. As remote as Salcido’s likelihood of victory may be, any underdog is more likely to win with one or two impactful punches than by trying to outfox a master tactician.

This fight is designed as a showcase more than anything. A fifth building block towards Cruz’s inevitable world title shot. The pressure is on, but that pressure pertains less to whether Cruz can win and more to whether he can do it impressively.

Cruz vs Salcido Prediction

I think Cruz wins here at 1/8. Last time out, the Cuban took out Moran, a fringe contender who had taken Arnold Barboza and Jamaine Ortiz the distance. I think Cruz is figuring out how to apply his power in the pro game after excelling in the amateurs.
