Agrba vs Munoz Fight Preview

Georgia-born Russian Agrba is one of many successful amateurs boxing on Friday’s card. During his days in the unpaid code, the 30-year-old wore silver at the 2019 European Championships among numerous medals.

Agrba’s pro career was progressing flawlessly after 15 fights, as well as three wins in the unofficial ‘IBA Pro’ bracket. Then the up-and-comer took on Argentine puncher Munoz, who had finished 13 of his 17 victims inside the distance.

In defence of Agrba’s team, they likely did not see a threat in Munoz due to his second-round knockout loss to Elias Mauricio Haedo in 2023. But despite that devastating defeat, Munoz was a power-puncher with plenty of experience to boot.

The first round is a fascinating watch. While Agrba keeps his stance tight and his work tidy, he meets a fighter who is almost his mirror image. While Agrba is a southpaw, Munoz meets him in centre-ring from the orthodox stance displaying the same high guard and almost identical handspeed.

Both fighters use their jab to create openings from behind a tight, elbows-tucked defence. The first 180 seconds sees them cancel each other out.

The second round reveals the first point of difference; a pair of ramrod lefts from Agrba. The first jolts Munoz’s head back. Visibly buoyed by his success, Agrba lunges a little with his second. It is an even hard shot, but Munoz uses this physical overcommitment to throw a jab, a straight right and then a punishing left cross to bring about the swift, decisive end of the contest. A fierce flourish of fistic finality.

Agrba is not the first amateur superstar to taste professional canvas with a punch-loosened tongue. British fans remember Olympic silver medalist Amir Khan sprawled at the feet of unheralded Breidis Prescott. The Bolton lad went on to become a unified world champion in a fine career. But Agrba is attempting something ‘King’ Khan never did; a rematch with his knockout conqueror.

The Russian is clearly keen to erase his disappointment. Munoz knocked him out in July and he was back in the ring in October. That 10-round points win over Namibia’s Charles Shinima got Agrba’s sea legs back under him. Now the 30-year-old goes back into the lion’s den.

These revenge missions can work. Anthony Joshua learned from his June 2019 destruction at the hands of Andy Ruiz Jr. Six months later, AJ relied on caution and technique to outpoint his man. But sometimes it can blow up in your face. Ask British heavyweights David Price and Joe Joyce whether they regret going back in with Tony Thompson and Zhilei Zhang. Each man had a second knockout loss to endure in the aftermath of their courage.

It is a gamble Agrba has chosen to take. Is it possible to consign such a quick defeat to memory and move on? We find out on Friday afternoon.

Agrba vs Munoz Prediction

I think the most interesting thing about this fight is how closely matched the pairing seemed before the finish. Both men approached the fight patiently behind a high guard. It was only when Agrba let his shots go that he got caught in response.

Will that lead to some caution? If it does, I can see Munoz picking up some hard-to-score rounds. But I do think Agrba has more in the tank over a distance fight. If he can balance pragmatism and punch-picking, I reckon the Russian takes enough of his chances to win at 2/5.
