Abdullah Mason vs Manuel Jaimes Predictions: Another step-up for the next big thing

Big-punching prospect Abdullah Mason returns against the tough Manuel Jaimes. The bout takes place at the Madison Square Garden Theater on the Denys Berinchyk-Keyshawn Davis undercard. The event will be broadcast live on DAZN. 

Here are my Mason vs Jaimes predictions ahead of a fight that will attract a lot of eyeballs.

Abdullah Mason vs Manuel Jaimes Odds

Mason knows he is expected to walk this, with odds of 1/33 reflecting that. Jaimes has it all to do at 10/1. The draw is marketed at 25/1.

Mason is making friends and influencing people wherever he goes. 14 knockouts in 16 fights will do that for you. A spate of amateur titles meant there was anticipation for the young man’s debut back in 2021. I think it’s fair to say the young man has matched that and then some.

Boxing will always hold space for a knockout artist. When push comes to shove, many fall by the wayside when they start meeting fighters that won’t bow. Tyrone Brunson broke the record for the most first-round knockouts, racking up 19 in a row. He would win just three of his ensuing 10 fights as the notoriety he had earned necessitated better opposition. The likes of Caleb Plant, Dennis Hogan, Carson Jones and Tony Harrison all beat him with little trouble.

Mason has already started adjusting to fighting better names than his early-career cannon fodder. Yohan Vasquez, Mike Ohan Jr. and Luis Lebron will never see the Hall of Fame in Canastota, but they had been around and won plenty of fights. 

Jaimes is another rung up on the greasy ladder of lightweight success. In his last fight he took Rolando Romero, who had only just lost the WBA title, the full 10-round distance. The watchword is durability when it comes to the Stockton slugger.

Jaimes holds wins over several of the division’s top gatekeepers. Men like Jonathan Romero, Belmar Preciado and Moises Flores who have been in some big fights and given former and future champions some tough nights.

Abdullah feels like a fighter in that latter category. The expectation that he will wear one of boxing’s plethora of world belts one day is palpable. When he fought Ohan I said on these pages that he won’t be boxing fighters of that level much longer. Jaimes is a cut above Ohan and I maintain the same sentiment. I don’t think we will see Abdullah against another fighter like Jaimes either. 

That is no dig at his opponent. I just think Abdullah’s ceiling is high and another punch-perfect display will propel him even closer to it. I think 2025 will be a year of going up through the gears for Abdullah. Perhaps a former world title challenger next. Then an ex-champ to round off the annum. 

Next year I can see Abdullah entering a world title challenge. It’s a stacked division at lightweight so he will need to pick his shot carefully. But if he keeps up this electric form, one could even see him entering a title fight as the favourite.

I think Mason by knockout is a pretty safe one here. Jaimes has never been stopped but he’s never met a puncher like the 20-year-old he’s in there with.

The youngster to pull this off by stoppage is 1/3 and I’m very secure in that pick. Bombs away.
