Abdullah Mason vs Carlos Ornelas Fight Preview
When the likes of then-champion Devin Haney, Ryan Garcia and ex-titlists Teofimo Lopez and George Kambosos Jr. all moved up to super lightweight, it looked like the lightweight division’s run as the hottest weight-class in boxing was coming to an end. But Mason is one of the fighters injecting some fresh blood into the storied division.
Mason, along with new IBF kingpin Keyshawn Davis, Raymond Muratalla, Andy Cruz and William Zepeda, is one of the fighters ensuring the lightweight division keeps the eyeballs that Haney et al trained on the 135lb class in place.
Mason was originally set to test his skills against Giovanni Cabrera, who has experience against world class fighters like Isaac Cruz and Zepeda. Replacement Ornelas has been the distance with current WBO featherweight champion Rafael Espinoza, but has limited lightweight outings on his resume.
That could prove a problem against Mason. ‘Dulah’ has spent his entire career in this division, garnering 15 knockouts from 17 wins against no defeats. That power against someone who has campaigned mostly at featherweight could be a problem.
The truth is, Mason has been a problem for most fighters he has faced. But the 20-year-old has not had it all his own way.
Yohan Vasquez tested his minerals thoroughly in their fight last November. Mason was knocked down twice in the opening round, book-ending his own knockdown of Vasquez. In the second stanza, Mason lowered the boom and stopped the teak-tough Dominican. It was a rollercoaster fight and a learning experience for the youngster.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
Those lessons were applied in his next, and most recent, fight. Mason needed just four rounds to stop Manuel Jaimes. His opponent had beaten ex-WBO super bantamweight champion Jonathan Romero and taken Rolly Romero the distance. But ‘Dulah’ summoned up the punches to take him out early.
Given the durability and experience of some of the men Mason has already dispatched, one worries for Ornelas. The nature of a replacement opponent is they are often picked on availability as much as anything else. Ornelas is a decent fighter, but you do not want to be taking on Abdullah Mason in your second fight as a lightweight.
Mason can only fight what is in front of him. As he climbs the world rankings, the clamour will grow louder for him to fight bigger names. If ‘Dulah’ wants a world title shot, that is a necessity. But on Saturday it is about clearing the path. Ornelas stands in his way.

Abdullah Mason vs Carlos Ornelas Prediction
This is going to be a straightforward night in the career of Mason. I do not foresee another Vasquez-style mini-war. I reckon ‘Dulah’ does the job at 1/33.
