Wakefield trinity vs castleford tigers

Wakefield play rivals Castleford to open day two of the Betfred Super League's Magic Weekend on Merseyside, with Trinity pushing hard for a top-four finish (12:30pm BST, live on Sky Sports Action).

Wakefield have won five of their last six to sit level with third-placed Wigan while Castleford's stop-start season has shown signs of quality but an absence of any consistency. Read on for my Wakefield Trinity vs Castleford Tigers predictions.

Team News

Trinity make three changes this week, all of which strengthen the squad. Winger Lachlan Walmsley is finally fit to return, and energetic centre Jayden Myers is too. Matty Storton returns to the squad after missing out last week in what was the only change.

England hopefully Oli Pratt remains out, as does half-back Mason Lino and centre Corey Hall.

The men to drop out from last week are youngsters Kian McGann and Charlie Abraham plus Jordan Williams.

Cas make four changes with returns for hooker Liam Hood and veteran Joe Westerman. Wide men Darnell McIntosh and Mikaele Ravalawa are also back to boost the options in the outside backs, with Zac Cini, Jenson Windley, Sam Hall and Jordan Lane the men to make way.

Handicap 3-Way Wakefield -14  @ 10/11

Wakefield survived a scare last week and ultimately showed their class to weather a Huddersfield storm to win 29-23 with a dramatic last-minute intercept try.

I have them to win again this week and keep up that playoff momentum but they may not have it all their own way against a Cas side who are so frustrating to predict. At their best, this is a really dangerous Tigers team, as they showed in beating St Helens with ease at the end of May.

But since then they have been losing games that they should have won, and that is a worrying trend when you have one of the most prolific wingers scoring every week but still ending up on the losing side.

This could be a really good derby, but Wakefield are my pick and I have them to cover the handicap too. They did so with ease at Easter in a 34-0 romp.

Price Boost: Tom Johnstone & Jason Qareqare To Score A Try Anytime @ 11/4

The quality in the outside backs is a good enough reason on its own to watch this game. Castleford top scorer Jason Qareqare has won a fair few admirers this season and just can't stop scoring tries. He is 11/10 to score anytime in this one after crossing again in defeat against York last week - his 13th of the season and ninth in the last six games alone.

That left edge with centre Krystian Mapapalangi (6/4) is the sweet spot for Tigers points, while Wakefield have options all over the place. England winger Tom Johnstone is rated most likely scorer with Betfred at 4/7, with Josh Rourke a decent 11/10 price after his double in the win over Huddersfield last week.

My second selection takes the top two strike threats from either side, with both Johnstone and Qareqare to cross for a try boosted by Betfred to 11/4.
