1.5 units Jonny Clayton to win @ 12/1

Jonny put in a solid couple of days on the Pro Tour earlier this week, reaching a semi-final and the last 16, he’ll perhaps be kicking himself that he didn’t manage to pick up a title as he had a good opportunity to do so both days.

He was the leader in the Welsh team at the World Cup last weekend as himself and Nick Kenny had a respectable run to the quarter-finals, only narrowly losing out to eventual winners and strong tournament favourites England 8-7. Jonny done the majority of the heavy lifting throughout for Wales and can be relatively happy with his efforts in Frankfurt.

Looking ahead to this weekend, it’s a reasonable enough draw for The Ferret - he’ll play the winner of Ryan Joyce and Johan Engstrom in the last 32, before playing one of De Decker, O’Connor or De Graaf to try and book his spot in the Sunday evening session. He’s withdrawn from the last few European Tour events so has only played in four this year but he’s already made a final. The form looks good enough for Clayton to make a real go of making himself the first time winner of this brand new event, after a couple of weeks of good performances with little rewards.

1 unit Ross Smith to win @ 18/1

I feel I’ve been a regular backer of Ross Smith with my outrights this year, but it’s brought a fair bit of success. I feel like nobody is really talking about him but it’s quietly becoming the best year of his career to date - he’s already won three events and we’re only in June. Smudger finally got the monkey off his back of having never won a European Tour title, getting over the finishing line at the fifth time of asking as he won the International Darts Open last month.

He played some really good stuff at the Pro Tours in Wigan this week, albeit he didn’t come close to winning a title, with averages of 108 and 105 being recorded. Having won a Pro Tour a few weeks ago, he has the chance to make it a hat-trick of titles in the space of a month, something he’s never achieved before.

I like the draw for Ross - there’s a lot of good names in the other half of this section, such as Van Gerwen, Ratajski, Woodhouse and Gilding who could all beat each-other. This mini-section looks more manageable and he’ll likely face Joe Cullen in the last 32 who just isn’t playing great at the moment. This is followed by a potential match against Chris Dobey who wasn’t at his scintillating best in Wigan this week and rarely seems to have the answers on the European Tour.

Considering he’s already made two finals on the European Tour this year, 18/1 looks good value for him to add another title and make this year even better for himself.

1 unit Rob Cross each-way @ 20/1

This was a tricky decision as to who I picked in this quarter between Cross and Aspinall. Aspinall hasn’t played a lot of darts recently and given he’s had a busy time of it in his personal life in recent weeks, I’m not convinced he’ll have had all that much practice. So I couldn’t look past Cross in the end who just enjoyed his first ranked PDC title since February of last year as he won PC22 in Wigan on Wednesday.

You’d have to say it’s been coming for Rob, it may be the race for the World Matchplay that’s gave him extra motivation but the performances and results have been on the up for a while now. His record on the European Tour the last couple of years is nothing to write home about but he made back-to-back semi-finals last month and winning one of these may be the next thing on the agenda in his preparation for the World Matchplay, which he’s now sealed his spot in.

It won’t be an easy road for Voltage this weekend if he’s to go all the way though - he’ll face one of the Host Nation Qualifiers in the opening round, which should be a walk in the park. But it gets a whole lot tougher after that as he’d face Gian Van Veen in a blockbuster last 32 tie, before a potential match against Kevin Doets or Damon Heta. There’s no easy matches after the last 48 for Bobby, but he’s looking better equipped to deal with it now than he has for a long time and I think it can be considered a real contender for the title in Slovakia.
