Toulouse vs Bristol Prediction: Stade Ernest-Wallon victory a bridge too far for Bristol

Bristol Bears face the daunting task of a trip to Stade Ernest-Wallon when they take on Toulouse in the round of 16 of the European Rugby Champions Cup on Saturday (17:30, Premier Sports 1).
Alex Jack provides his best bets in his Toulouse vs Bristol prediction piece, as well as all the essential team news and match odds for the knockout game in the south of France.
Toulouse have gone with David Ainu’u, Peato Mauvaka and Dorian Aldegheri in the front row, with locks Thibaud Flament and Emmanuel Meafou in behind.
Francois Cros, Jack Willis and Anthony Jelonch form a star-studded back row, while there’s no lack of quality in the half-back pairing of Antoine Dupont and Romain Ntamack.
Pierre-Louis Barassi and Kalvin Gourgues start in the centres, while Toulouse boast a back three of Matthis Lebel, Teddy Thomas and Thomas Ramos.
As for the Bears, Bristol have a front row of Ellis Genge, Gabriel Oghre and George Kloska, with locks James Dun and Joe Owen in the engine room.
Steven Luatua, Fitz Harding and Benjamin Grondona complete the pack, with Harry Randall and Tom Jordan in the half-backs.
James Williams and Benhard Janse van Rensburg are the starting centres, while Bristol boss Pat Lam has gone with a back three of Gabriel Ibitoye, Kalaveti Ravouvou and Louis Rees-Zammit.
Toulouse are the overwhelming favourites at 1/100 to win this match, while Sanderson's youthful-looking Sale side are 22/1 outsiders with the draw priced at 80/1.
In the three-way handicap market, Toulouse are 5/6 to come through when handing their opponents a 39-point head start, while Sale are 10/11 to prevail with that advantage.
Toulouse -28 handicap @ 11/10
Taking on many of the French national side who just triumphed in the 2026 Six Nations is the huge challenge that awaits Lam’s Bristol at the Stade Ernest-Wallon.
Currently on a 15-game winning run at home in all competitions, Toulouse have looked unstoppable on their own patch in the last year.
Having won 77-7 when Sale Sharks arrived in the south of France in January, Toulouse have already shown what they can do to Gallagher Prem opposition.
With Dupont and Ntamack having the ability to thrive and dictate the play in these European knockout games, it’s hard to see Bristol having the firepower to put enough points on the scoreboard.
Toulouse’s passing ability, even in the forwards, means they can score tries from all over the field and the Bears’ defence is expected to be tested from all angles.
Given the superstars in this Toulouse side and what they managed to do to the Sharks at the Stade Ernest-Wallon earlier this season, it’s hard to see Bristol keeping this one close on Saturday.
A -28 handicap is substantial but given their form at home and Bristol’s struggles since resuming after the Six Nations, Toulouse can cover the spread here.
