Full disclosure. I’ll be staying up to watch Super Bowl LX, on Sunday night/early Monday morning. It’s one of those standouts that needs to be accommodated, even if Monday in the office could be decidedly on the bleary side of meh.
The NFL season reaching its thundering climax at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara has been a topsy-turvy thriller from start to finish, and one of the stories of the campaign has been the renaissance of the New England Patriots, bottom of the AFC East in ‘24/25 with an abysmal 4-14 record, now sensationally taking the Division going 14-3.
They’re here in California for the big one, with head coach Mike Vrabel at the helm (three SB titles as a linebacker, during the Brady/Belichick glory years for the franchise).
Their opponents are the Seattle Seahawks, another 14-3 outfit this time (in the NFC) improving nicely but far less spectacularly, having gone 10-7 last term.
Both clinched tight Conference Championship thrillers to get here – the Pats edging Denver 10-7 in the snow at Mile High, with the Broncos unable to shake off the loss of QB Bo Nix in the preceding match; and the ‘Hawks taking a far more expansive see-saw cracker against the Rams 31-27, at Lumen Field.
Seattle’s Kenneth Walker impressed me immensely in the latter contest. He rushed for 62 yards, showing electric pace and elusiveness. Another 49 yards was achieved receiving, and for me he was their outstanding man. Best player on the field in fact, in my humble opinion.
Big question number one then – can the Pats keep him relatively quiet? New England’s run defense is ranked seventh, and is seen as a strength. Walker is sensational when on-song but can throw in the odd relative no-show, so the jury is out slightly on this front.
For all that the Seahawks like to run the ball they have weapons indeed in their receiving corps – notably the prolific youngster Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and veteran Cooper Kupp. Plenty of variety then at the disposal of QB Sam Darnold, who operates at an elite level when protected well, but suffers markedly when efficiently hounded and pressured (who doesn’t?).
The Pats, according to popular legend, had a relatively easy schedule during regular season. That still meant two clashes with the Bills (honours even), and their QB Drake Maye has been in the MVP conversation for months.
Vrabel has worked a minor miracle to get here and deserves massive credit. Seattle’s Mike Macdonald has taken the post-Pete Carroll ‘Hawks to this pinnacle in impressive fashion too, and just over a decade after their last appearance chasing the Lombardi (losing heartbreakingly to New England), the franchise look to secure a second title after the Legion of Boom legends thrashed Denver in New York the season before, to break their duck.
Anyhow - I’ve fashioned the following treble, looking at various props in the match, and the traders have created a #PickYourPunt to embrace it, at the price quoted.
I’m thinking the match should be competitive, but if anyone’s going to win with a degree of authority it’s more likely to be Seattle. The total is pitched at around the mid-40s as I write, and as usual that looks brilliantly judged.
There are compelling cases to be made for both sides of it, and if Darnold gets harried and Maye continues to have a touch of the playoff blues (he’s been a little muted of late for me), it could yet look quite big.
However – in what seems likely to be benign Californian weather, if Sam is on-song and Messrs Walker and Smith-Njigba are doing their thing, it could be that the Pats must wait a while longer for another Lombardi having won all their previous six in a glorious spell between 2002 and 2019. That total could be in peril, too (hopefully not).
I'm going for the Seattle star wideout to claim a TD; the match total points to be under 47.5; and that neither side will rack up 30+ points. A fun bet - have a good look around all the hundreds of props and #PYP opportunities and see if any take your fancy.
Enjoy the spectacle, and if you do have a little tickle, good luck!
