Danny Noppert most 180s vs Lukas Wenig @ 1/3
I made Noppert the favourite against Van Gerwen in the last 16 and thankfully he lived up to that. It was another brilliant performance from Danny as he came flying out the traps in the early stages, it was fairly tight throughout but it always felt like MVG was doing the chasing and Noppert eventually pulled away and won fairly comfortably in the end - 10-6.
An average above 98 and particularly the 53% on doubles really helped him across the line in that one. That’s the last three games he’s averaged 98, 107 and 100, if he continues in that vein then he should coast to victory tonight.
Wenig is enjoying a dream run which is doing wonders for him in his bid to save his tour card. He did cause Noppert problems in the group stages, narrowly losing 5-4 and probably should have won, but over a longer format you’d like to think Danny can do it a bit more comfortably this time round.
I can’t say I’d be in a hurry to back Noppert to win this one though. The odds are a bit on the skinny side for my liking.
It’s a different kind of pressure for him tonight as he is a big favourite. He experienced something similar at the European Championship last month when he played Ricardo Pietreczko in the quarter-finals, he eventually won that 10-5 but made it hard at times and was only 29% on doubles - albeit he had a German crowd on Pietreczko’s side to contend with that day too.
I’d rather focus on Noppert's 180s which is another strength he’s added to his game in recent times. You wouldn’t usually think of him when naming the biggest 180 hitters in the game, but the Dutchman is sixth in the world for number of 180s hit since the beginning of July.
Noppie has hit seventeen 180s in 43 legs so far this week, whereas Wenig has only hit seven 180s in 41 legs. It looks the safest bet in this match at 1/3. Fingers crossed for wins on the legs and 180s front for The Freeze.
Over 19.5 total 180s in Luke Littler vs Josh Rock @ 8/15
I can’t wait for this one. These two have only played twice since Littler got on tour, and both of their matches came in recent months - but both were memorable battles.
It was the younger man in Littler who came out on top on both occasions, but not without a scare. Rock led their World Matchplay semi-final 6-1, before Littler clawed it back and eventually won 17-14 in a modern-day classic. Their other meeting was a Euro Tour final in August, Rock also led that one 5-2 but again Littler completed the comeback and won 8-7.
Whether those defeats are still on the mind of Rock or not remains to be seen, but I guess we may get our answer tomorrow. The prospect of playing Littler certainly doesn’t seem to phase Josh though, as he’s played to a high level and averaged above 100+ both times.
Rocky wasn’t at the races against Connor Scutt in the last 16 but got off the hook. He’ll need to be so much better tonight, but he knows that.
Littler has been coasting through so far and made light work of Nijman last round, averaging 105.38 and making it look effortless. The Nuke was 10/12 on his doubles and if he keeps that up then he’ll be near impossible to beat the way he scores.
I think it’s pretty obvious to say that 180s is the most sensible route to take on the betting in this one. The pair of them racked up 29 of them across 31 legs in their Matchplay semi and hit fifteen 180s between them in as many legs in their final on the Euro Tour.
So, over 46 legs they’re managing almost a 180 per leg combined. You’d have to imagine 20+ 180s is a near shoo-in in a match that should have 30+ legs.
Odds of 8/15 are a tad generous and takes the double to a nice price.
