1 units Gian Van Veen (each-way 1/2 - 2 Places) @ 16/1

It’s been another progressive season so far for Gian, which now has him on the brink of breaking into the top 16 in the rankings. Runs to the quarters of both the UK Open and World Matchplay this year, as well as winning his maiden Pro Tour title, has him on the outskirts of possibly getting a nod for next year’s Premier League too. He’s one of many on the conveyer belt of promising young players beginning to make a real impact on tour. One thing I think separates Van Veen from a lot of the others is the way he comes across in interviews, he seems to have a very wise head on young shoulders and seems more than mature enough already to cope with being at the very top in the game.

He’s yet to win a Euro Tour event, but certainly has been knocking on the door - The Giant has now made two finals in his last fifteen Euro Tour appearances, losing out to fellow countryman Michael Van Gerwen on both occasions, 8-7 and 8-5. The next step for him without doubt will be winning a title on a big stage and the Euro Tour is a good platform to do just that, we have seen the likes of Luke Humphries begin their winning spells here then transferring that to the biggest tournaments. He may also take a bit of inspiration from seeing Niko Springer win his maiden Euro Tour title last weekend, as Gian is every bit as good as Niko in my opinion.

Recent form is strong from the Dutchman, reaching the final of a Pro Tour event a couple weeks ago, losing out to Gerwyn Price in the final. He also made the semi finals of the Czech Darts Open, defeating the likes of Littler and Price along the way. He actually averaged 106 incredibly in a 6-3 defeat to eventual champion Springer last weekend, so shouldn’t beat himself up about that.

It’s a fairly open quarter of the draw that Van Veen sits in this week, the streaky Van Duijvenbode looks the likely opponent on Saturday, followed by a tie against Joyce or Wade. He’ll need to be near his best early on to progress through the rounds but averaging 99+ in 10 of his last 14 matches tells us that Gian is in good shape for the challenge and another deep run on the Euro Tour looks imminent at very tempting odds, priced at 16/1.

0.75 units Martin Schindler (each-way 1/2 - 2 Places) @ 28/1

This was a really tricky decision trying to pick between Schindler and Clayton in this half of the draw. In the end, I’ve opted for the longer odds of the little German at 28/1, instead of the 20/1 on Jonny. One of the reasons for this was that Schindler actually has a better record in recent times on the Euro Tour - The Wall has won three titles in his last 23 Euro Tour events, which is a cracking return when you consider his odds are 33/1. He’s won all three Euro Tour finals he’s played in, so although he hasn’t quite managed to crack the big majors yet, he hasn’t suffered any such problems getting over the finish line on the Euro Tour.

He won the inaugural edition of the Swiss Darts Trophy last year, so will have fond memories coming back here which could inspire him onto another big run in Basel. Martin beat Ryan Searle 8-7 in a nailbiting final last year, with wins over the likes of Rock and Bunting on route to that.

The draw doesn’t look too bad outside of the possibility of facing Aspinall or Clayton in the last 16, if he can win that then the draw really starts to open up. Chris Dobey is the only other real “threat” in the quarter, but just three semi-final appearances in his last 43 Euro Tour events, suggests Dobey probably won’t come out on top in this quarter. The form of Schindler is decent if not spectacular, some good showings on the Pro Tour in recent months are enough to suggest that his A-game isn’t too far from the surface and it may just re-emerge, coming back to a place where he’s tasted silverware already.
