After a thumping 34-4 win over Wakefield Trinity, St Helens are back in action on Sunday against Huddersfield Giants (14:30 BST, live on BBC Two). Saints legend Paul Sculthorpe is here with his St Helens vs Huddersfield Giants predictions.

The Saints turned in a very clinical performance on Friday over at Wakefield, against an in-form Trinity side.

As I said in last week's column, it’s not been a happy hunting ground for St Helens in the past - something I know all too well!

However, this was something clearly not going to affect this result, as the visitors went on to claim a huge 34-4 win, and further secure Saints position in the play-off places.

The club are currently in fourth place in the Betfred Super League, one point behind the Leigh Leopards, and on the number of points (28) as Leeds in fifth but with far superior points difference. Hull FC make up the top six on 23 points with six regular rounds remaining.

One driving force of Saints current form coming into the business end of the season has been the forward pack. These guys have lead from the front, leading the intensity and energy in both attack and defence.

It was the biggest of the big fellas who opened up the scoreboard after just six minutes. Alex Walmsley came on to a lovely short pass from Morgan Knowles 10m from the Wakefield try-line, and there was only ever going to be one outcome.

Six minutes later, it was Morgs who was the recipient. A great kick chase from Owen Dagnall, beating all the Wakey backfield to the ball, to put his loose forward under the posts - 12-nil Saints in as many minutes.

It was the right edge next to show what they can do, as great interplay between Lomax, Robertson and Feldt broke the Trinity defence, feeding the ever-supporting Daryl Clark to score Saints third try on his 400th career appearance.

Wakefield scored their only points of the game on the 34th minute as Lachlan Walmsley dove in at the right corner. That made it 20-4 at halftime and the away side in full control.

The second half was pretty much business as usual, as Saints went on to score 14 unanswered points, and secure a massive two league points in the Betfred Super League.

Saints' defence has never been questioned, that is something the players and staff pride themselves on. But, for me in the last month or so we have seen far more connectivity and threat with ball in hand.

Moses Mbye and Jonnie Lomax look very settled on the halves. Moses steering the team around the field, and taking control of the kicking game, allowing Jonnie to do what he does best and play on the edges and short-sides with vision.

With the likes of Robertson, Sailor, Percival and Dagnall, all in great form and all looking like they are loving their rugby, Saints are growing nicely towards the all-important time of the season.

I look at the other teams in the Betfred Super League, and current performance - and a fit and healthy Saints in this form beat anyone.

Sadly, one player who it looks like this season may have come to a premature end, is Jake Wingfield.

A leg injury sustained in the win on Friday, Wingy requires ankle surgery which will see him sidelined for seven to nine weeks.

It’s such a shame to see this, as Jake has been outstanding this season. A player who has covered a number of positions for the team, with his ability to do the tough stuff in the middle but also play with skill when required.

Best wishes to Jake on a speedy rehab, and who knows maybe a semi final and/or a Grand final return!

Title sponsors Betfred have the Saints 9/1 to lift the big prize at Old Trafford on Saturday October 11. The other candidates are priced as follows - Hull KR 11/10, Wigan 13/8, Leigh 11/1, Leeds 9/1 and Hull FC 50/1.

This week Saints are back at the Totally Wicked Stadium as we host the Huddersfield Giants on Sunday.

Despite a terrible season and only five wins in 2025 for the Giants, Luke Robinson’s men travel on the back of two consecutive wins against Hull FC and Catalans, so Saints have to again show up with that ruthless attitude.

I’m going for a home win by 19 points.
