Gary Anderson Under 6.5 180's vs Stephen Bunting @ 4/5

Sunday evening looked like it could be another struggle for Anderson in a televised major, as it so often has been for The Flying Scotsman over the past few years. Gary looked to be in a bit of a battle when he went in 5-5, but the Scot turned the game on it’s head after the break, as he reeled off five legs on the trot to run out a comfortable winner in the end over Luke Woodhouse. A 98.5 average and 10-5 win looks very easy on paper, but it wasn’t all plain sailing and some brilliant doubles (10/15, 66.67% hit) saved himself from any trouble.

Bunting equally looked like he was in for a long day at the office against Ryan Joyce, having started really slowly. He played really well in the second half of the match and despite Joyce pulling it back to 8-8, The Bullet had enough in the tank to get over the line with a 98 average and a quite brilliant ten 180s. Both players will feel they need to play more consistently in this clash.

Bunting will need to hope he can improve on his less than impressive record against Ando - the Liverpudlian has won just 4 of his 17 matches against Gary, which go all the way back to 2014. They’ve played three times previously in the Matchplay, with Anderson coming out on top in all of them.

History suggests the Scot will win this, but between his ropey majors record in recent years and Bunting’s rise up the rankings, I’d rather not take the chance.

4/5 for Anderson to hit under 6.5 180s looks a more reliable bet when you look into the stats - he’s averaging 0.36 180s per leg over the past 12 months, meaning he’d need around 20 legs or more in the match to achieve that. Bare in mind, this stat is somewhat inflated due to some fantastic showing on the Pro Tour from Anderson. He hit just two 180s across 15 legs in the first round, so I’m all over him to hit less than seven this time. Confident this lands, especially if the match avoids going into overtime.

Mike De Decker Under 6.5 180's vs Jonny Clayton @ 8/13

Jonny Clayton was playing like an absolute dream for the opening five legs against Schindler, as he led 4-1 with an average in excess of 112. In the end, that lightning start proved to be decisive as he fended off a top performance from Schindler to win 10-7. If Jonny can repeat that performance, I fancy him to run out an easy winner in this one against De Decker.

The Real Deal won a scrappy match against Dave Chisnall 10-7 to get his World Matchplay campaign underway, he’ll know himself he needs to improve on that performance to progress any further. A 93 average, despite hitting 55% of his doubles, just won’t cut it against an in-form Clayton.

The Belgian has been fairly open in interviews recently and when asked about how he’s getting on with his new darts, he admits he still doesn’t feel fully comfortable or as confident as he was when winning the World Grand Prix in October last year.

As a result, De Decker’s maximum hitting hasn’t been quite as frequent as it once was. He was known as one of the more prolific 180 hitters but they’ve dried up slightly since the switch to the new darts. He’s averaging 0.34 180s per leg the past 12 months (this includes being at his peak in Grand Prix), which means he’d need 21+ legs on average to hit 7+ 180s. This looks highly unlikely in this match as I think Clayton will win by at least a few legs, making under 6.5 180s for Mike look a fantastic bet.
