The Travelers Championship begins on Thursday at TPC River Highlands. I’ve come up with a trio of selections who I’m hoping can make a fast start in the final Signature Event of the season on the PGA Tour.
Conditions are forecast to warm and clear through the opening round, and it will be calmest for those teeing off earliest, with just a light 5mph breeze. However, wind speeds are predicted to rise steadily over the course of the day, blowing at a constant 12mph – and gusting at over 25mph – in the afternoon.
With that in mind, I’m focusing my attention in the first-round leader market on the earliest starters – ideally those with tee times before 10:00.
1 pt Bud Cauley each-way (1/4 - 5 places) @ 50/1
Start time: 08:00
Bud Cauley has been in great form in the last three months, picking up four top-six finishes. He’s benefited from several strong starts in recent weeks and with his wedges looking in good shape, he can hit the front tomorrow.
His best result came courtesy of a 3rd-place finish in the Charles Schwab Challenge three starts ago, and he was especially impressive on the bentgrass greens there, ranking 9th in putting. Indeed, it’s been a weapon of his over the previous three months, ranking 17th in this field, and he’s also shown quality with his long game, ranking 14th in approach and 18th off-the-tee.
Those results have often been engineered by fast starts, ranking 8th in first-round performance since March. He’s sat no worse than 11th after 18 holes in his last three starts, and he was particularly quick out of the blocks at Colonial, opening with a four-under 66 to finish day one in 2nd place.
Cauley has recorded two top-25 finishes in eight previous visits to TPC River Highlands. His 11th-place finish in 2014 rates as his strongest effort – an event in which he opened with a seven-under 63 to finish 2nd in the first-round leader market.

1 pt Harry Hall each-way (1/4 - 5 places) @ 50/1
Start time: 08:30
Harry Hall hasn’t missed the cut in his last nine starts and arrives here after gaining four top-25 finishes on the spin. He’s a prolific birdie-maker who does most of his best work in the opening round, making him a standout first-round leader candidate from his early start time.
Hall’s run of top-25s started with a 20th-place finish in the Myrtle Beach Classic. He’s since followed that with finishes of 19th in the PGA Championship, 6th in the Charles Schwab Challenge and 14th in the Canadian Open.
The putter is again doing most of the heavy lifting for the Englishman this year, ranking 4th. However, he’s also been solid in approach in recent starts. His scoring stats are especially appealing for this gettable venue – and for his hopes of being first-round leader – ranking 3rd in par 4 scoring, 5th in birdie or better %, and 5th in round one scoring.
Hall finished down the leaderboard in 56th on debut here in 2023. That being said, he returns as a more accomplished player – and PGA Tour winner – and with many of his better performances coming on bentgrass surfaces, I expect him to enjoy a good week in Connecticut – starting with a strong first-round display.

1 pt Stephan Jaeger each-way (1/4 - 5 places) @ 60/1
Start time: 09:35
Stephan Jaeger has been ultra-consistent in 2025, missing just three cuts in 17 starts. His first-round form is especially encouraging, ranking 4th in this field across the last three months, and I expect him to make another positive start today.
Jaeger has record two top-10 finishes this season – the first a 3rd-place finish in the Sony Open and his second came four starts ago in the Truist Championship, finishing 7th. He’s looked good in most areas but has excelled on the greens, ranking 28th, and his wedge game is also in fine shape, ranking 26th from 125-150yds.
If the German had performed as strongly through other rounds as he has in round one, he’d almost certainly have gone close to picking up another title in 2025, claiming five first-round top-10s in his last 10 starts. This includes opening with a four-under 67 to sit tied-1st thru 18 holes in the Valspar Championship; in addition, a four-under 67 in the PGA Championship, and a seven-under 64 in the CJ CUP Byron Nelson took him to 4th place on day one.
Jaeger has played at TPC River Highlands four times, making three cuts and recording a best of 30th in 2019. He’s fired a 65, a 66, and several 67s, and with his current knack for starting fast, he has every chance of hitting the front on Thursday.
