The 107th edition of the PGA Championship begins at Quail Hollow in just two days’ time.
With the first-round leader preview to come on Wednesday, I’ve first combed through the variety of side markets on offer, and found two selections that can give us some added interest in North Carolina this week.
3 pts Erik Van Rooyen Top African @ 18/5
First up is Erik van Rooyen, who I’m backing to be the highest-placed African player in the field this week. He’s found his best ball-striking form over his last couple of starts, and as an excellent long iron player who doesn’t lack for power, he could take some beating in this market.
Van Rooyen’s year was slow to get going, but he has shown better form across his last half-dozen regular starts. He recorded his first top-10 of the season with a 9th-place finish at the Cognizant Classic and added a second two weeks ago, finishing a distant runner-up to Scottie Scheffler at the CJ CUP Byron Nelson.
Although he finished down in 34th at last week’s Truist Championship, he bookended that event with strong rounds of 65 and 68. With his long game again looking solid, I’m expecting him to carry that momentum into this week.
The South African ranked 2nd in ball striking at the Byron Nelson and 7th last week, which mirrors his season-long stats. His iron play has been strong—ranking 31st in greens-in-regulation and 43rd in approach—and he’s been especially dialled in with his long irons, ranking 3rd from 200yds+ and 20th from 175–200yds. Meanwhile, as a top-50 driver able to combine power with accuracy, he has an ideal ball-striking profile for this test.
He has missed the cut on each of his previous visits to Quail Hollow, but he wasn’t striking the ball to the same standard he is now. As such, I’m expecting a much-improved performance this week.
Van Rooyen’s best major finish came in this event at Bethpage Black in 2019, where he finished 8th. It remains the strongest piece of U.S.-based major championship form among the South African players in this week’s field.
With Dean Burmester not in quite the same form as last year; Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Thriston Lawrence both collecting missed cuts for fun; and Daniel van Tonder and Garrick Higgo unlikely to make an impact—he looks the standout player in this market.

2 pts Adam Scott Top Oceania @ 6/1
There are question marks hanging over each player from Australasia this week, but after delivering his best driving performance of the season in Philadelphia, I think it may be veteran Adam Scott who tops the lot at Quail Hollow.
Scott began the season well enough, recording two top-25 finishes in his first three starts. Although he hasn’t recorded another one since, he did produce his third-highest finish of the season in last week’s Truist Championship, finishing 34th.
He had started to get the driver back under control in his previous two starts, and he showed this again last week, combining power and accuracy to rank 11th off-the-tee. His iron play has regressed since his impressive early-season performances, though he does rank an encouraging 30th from 200yds+. With two of his best putting performances this season coming on bermudagrass-based surfaces, there are several reasons to feel confident.
This market has plenty of class, although it’s hard to make a strong case for most of them. Jason Day heads the betting and is a past winner here, but he withdrew last week due to a neck injury. Meanwhile, second-favourite Min Woo Lee has struggled for form since winning in Houston.
Cam Smith and Cam Davis are both hitting the ball poorly; Elvis Smylie and Karl Vilips are big talents, but their inexperience may count against them; and although Ryan Fox will be flying high after last week’s win, he hadn’t shown much prior and could easily drop back down in level.
Possessing several top-10s at Quail Hollow—including a 3rd-place finish in 2006 and a 5th-place finish as recently as 2023—Scott’s record here outshines all but the injury-troubled Day. Therefore, he feels like a reasonably safe pair of hands in an otherwise unpredictable betting heat.
