Rob Cross to beat Chris Dobey @ 8/11
Rob Cross has really upped his level of performance recently. 'Voltage' has already enjoyed two title victories already this year - winning the Dutch Darts Masters and the first Pro Tour event of the year. He’s followed that up with some solid form, producing some top performances in the Premier League which have seen him climb back into contention for a spot in the top four of the league table. He was extremely unfortunate not to find himself in the final on Night Five, having posted averages of 107 and 111. Cross has averaged 98+ in seven of his last eleven matches so comes into this week in better form than most.
His opponent Dobey got his Premier League campaign off to a flyer when he made the final on Night One, but has since struggled and failed to pick up as much as a single victory in four attempts since. The Premier League can become a pretty pressuring, lonely place to be if you end up cut adrift near the bottom of the league and that’s what Dobey is in danger of experiencing unless he picks up points soon, as a three-point gap already separate himself from Cross in sixth place.
It can become a vicious cycle losing every week, he’s currently in a bit of a rut which I think he’ll do well to come out of considering he’s playing someone in better form this week. Hollywood has had some double trouble recently - hitting less than 40% of his doubles in eleven of his last eighteen matches, he’ll need to rectify that if he’s to win here.
It could well be tight and the bookmakers clearly think so, however I think there’s less pressure on Cross and with him winning a lot more than he’s losing lately, this is the type of match he’ll find a way to get over the line in.
Nathan Aspinall +2.5 legs handicap @ 2/5
There’s a lot of talk about MVG just now and unfortunately for him it’s not positive talk. 'The Green Machine' is putting in some really below average performances of late - the most recent one coming against Boris Krcmar at the Belgian Darts Open on Saturday night, as he went down 6-3 to the big Croat. MVG averaged below 94 in that one and had only nine darts at a double, compared to 22 for Krcmar, which tells you the Dutchman was totally outscored.
This comes shortly after some laboured performances in the Premier League in recent weeks and a disappointing defeat to Robert Owen at the UK Open. A lot has been said about his throw/stance and he still seems to be struggling to find any consistency at all on that front. Mighty Mike has averaged below 96 in six of his last seven matches, similar here may not be enough.
Aspinall has enjoyed a nice resurgence in the Premier League in recent weeks - making two finals over the last three nights and has won his opening match the past three nights, that’s seen him soar into the top four out of nowhere, despite many predicting him to finish bottom come the end of 17 weeks.
The Asp also enjoyed a decent run to the quarter finals of the UK Open, so confidence will be building. This is arguably the best form he’s injured since returning from injury late last year.
It’s usually tight when these two meet - in terms of needing Aspinall to win 4+ legs, he’s achieved that the last five times they have played in first to six leg matches and in eleven of their last twelve meetings over the same format. A fair few of they five were when Asp was struggling with pain in the throwing arm which he no longer is.
The form of these two are going opposite directions now and personally I’d have nothing in the odds here, Aspinall to win 4+ legs at 2/5 is highly likely for me.
