When and where is SPOTY 2024 taking place?

The glamorous awards ceremony returns to Media City in Salford on Tuesday, December 19. It will be hosted by Gabby Logan, Alex Scott and Clare Balding.

It will commence from 19:00 GMT on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

Who are the SPOTY 2024 nominees?

Keely Hodgkinson @ 1/3

Team GB runner Keely Hodkinson was able to claim her first-ever major global title at the Paris Olympics as she stormed to gold in the 800m. The 22-year-old had won silver in back-to-back World Championships before the summer event, and it was the same colour medal she claimed on her Olympic debut at Tokyo three years earlier as a teenager.

Hodgkinson delivered a dominant performance inside the Stade de France as she found another gear coming into the home stretch to move clear of the field. It was Team GB's first Olympic track title since Sir Mo Farah's 5,000m and 10,000m double at the Rio Games back in 2016.

This also saw her become just the 10th British woman to win an athletics gold in the history of the Olympics.

She's currently the 1/3 favourite right now and it looks like she will have the public's backing next week.

Luke Littler @ 9/4

Cast your mind back a year when this young man, a 16-year-old, as the media loved reminding us all, propelled himself to stardom in the darting world as he made his way to the PDC World Championship final on debut.

Luke Littler's amazing record-breaking run at Alexandra Palace came to an end when he was defeated by world number one Luke Humphries, who has had an abundance of success this season. Littler was immediately awarded a place on the exclusive Premier League roster.

He went on to win this event, avenging his World Championship defeat to Humphries, becoming the youngest player ever to do so. He also recently claimed the Grand Slam of Darts title in November. His titles for the season stand at an impressive 10 and he is only the fourth person in history to accomplish such a feat.

Littler is next up at 9/4, and his persona could certainly collect a large volume of votes on Tuesday.

Alex Yee @ 33/1

When it comes to measuring success for a triathlete, Britain's Alex Yee had an incredible 2024 as he ends it as the world and Olympic champion. For those of you who didn't tune into his triumph in Paris, Yee somehow managed to find a gear to help him overcome a 15-second deficit behind New Zealand's Hayden Wilde (who he also defeated to claim the world title) in the final kilometre.

It was Yee's first individual Olympic gold, having been part of the winning mixed relay team in Tokyo. He also helped the mixed relay team claim bronze in Paris. It has been a sensational year for Yee, and he has rightly been recognised for this honour.

Jude Bellingham @ 80/1

England footballer Jude Bellingham enjoyed a stellar debut season with Real Madrid in 2023/24, scoring 23 goals across all competitions to help Los Blancos to a La Liga and Uefa Champions League double. His performances saw him collect the La Liga Player of the Season and Champions League Young Player of the Season awards.

Bellingham then played a key role in helping England to the Euro 2024 final against Spain, scoring two goals at the tournament in Germany - including a vital bicycle kick that salvaged extra time for the Three Lions against Slovakia in the round of 16.

Recently, the Real Madrid star came third in the prestigious Ballon d'Or rankings, which was won by Manchester City's Rodri.

Joe Root @ 80/1

England cricket legend Joe Root made history in brilliant fashion as he surpassed Alastair Cook's tally of 12,742 runs to become England's all-time leading run scorer in Test format, delivering a stunning 262 career best against Pakistan.

In that same Test, Root and Harry Brook made history together as they set an England record partnership of 454 runs. Earlier in the year, Root had surpassed Cook's mark for the most Test centuries as an England batter.

Root is now fifth on the all-time list of Test run scorers and became the first Englishman to exceed 20,000 international runs across formats. He currently has the most scored Test runs in 2024 (1,470) at the time of writing.

Sarah Storey @ 80/1

In the history of the Paralympics, no British athlete has had more success than Dame Sarah Storey. The cyclist added two more gold medals to her impressive collection in Paris over the summer, winning the C4-C5 road race and C5 road time trial.

Her medal tally from the Games now stands at 30, 19 of which are golds. Her latest came 32 years after she collected her very first in swimming at the Barcelona Games.

Storey's success continued at the Road and Para-cycling World Championships in Zurich as she again won the double of C4-C5 road race and C5 road time trial titles for an impressive 10th time, taking her golds total on the world stage to 39.

What better way is there to celebrate her remarkable career and longevity in sport than by giving her the SPOTY 2024 award?
