Patriots vs Jets Predictions: Patriots can be competitive again

This week's Thursday night game in the NFL is a classic AFC East match-up as the New England Patriots travel to MetLife Stadium to face the New York Jets.

The divisional rivals are two of the 14 teams with a 1-1 record after the first two weeks of action, with the Jets losing to the 49ers before beating the Titans, while the Patriots caused the biggest upset of Week One against the Bengals but lost in overtime to the Seahawks on Sunday. The Patriots are set to be without guard Sidy Sow (ankle), who has yet to play this season, along with linebacker Ja'Whaun Bentley (shoulder). Offensive tackle Vederian Lowe (knee) and linebacker Oshane Ximines (knee) are also injury concerns, along with centre David Andrews (hip) and safety Jabrill Peppers (shoulder).

The Jets will be without linebacker Jermaine Johnson (Achilles). They also have injury concerns over CJ Mosley (toe), running back Breece Hall (quadricep) and cornerbacks Michael Carter II (ankle) and DJ Reed (knee)

The Jets are strong favourites at home at 4/11, with the Patriots on offer at 11/5. The Jets are asked to give up 6.5 points on the handicap, with both teams priced at 10/11.

Over 38.5 points in the game is priced at 20/21 with under 38.5 at 20/23.

The New England Patriots were expected to be one of the worst teams in the NFL again this season after winning only four of their 17 games last year, but their early performances have been promising and they should be capable of at least staying in touch with the Jets.

The Patriots produced a stunning upset in the opening week to beat the Bengals 16-10 on the road, having been the biggest underdogs on the card, and they went close to a second win against the Seahawks on Sunday, losing 23-20 in overtime.

The Jets were not able to compete with NFC champions San Francisco in their opener, losing 32-19 at Levi's Stadium, but they got their first win on the board with a second-half comeback against the Titans in Tennessee to win 24-17.

With QB Aaron Rodgers having two games under his belt after missing almost all of last season due to injury, the Jets will be looking for a statement win in their first home fixture, but they have not fared at all well against the Patriots in recent seasons.

The Jets' 17-3 win at Gillette Stadium in January was their first success against the Patriots in 16 attempts and the men from Massachusetts have won on their last eight visits to New York.

The Patriots have covered the handicap in both their games this season and while the Jets may well win, they could struggle to post a wide-margin success.

The Jets have managed four passing touchdowns in their first two games but star wide receiver Garrett Wilson has yet to get off the mark for the season.

Wilson leads the team in targets with 17 and receiving yards with 117, and it should be only a matter of time before he returns to the end zone.

Jets quarterback Rodgers is likely to be keen to test the Patriots secondary in this primetime game and Wilson appeals as a potential first touchdown scorer.
