James Wade to beat Nathan Aspinall @ 5/6
Nathan Aspinall battled really well to come through his 1st round match against Luke Woodhouse, where he looked in trouble at times but eventually ran out a 10-8 winner. He’s probably going to have to improve on that 92 average to win here.
James Wade, meanwhile, won comfortably against #12 seed Danny Noppert 10-5, where 'The Machine' ran out into a 6-1 lead and there was only one winner from there. He played solidly with a 96 average and hit 45% on doubles, similar here will be enough to win in my opinion.
Obviously there’s been a lot of talk around Aspinall’s injury problems and he looked to be wincing in pain at times against Woodhouse, which is a concern. He’s already said this will be his last tournament for 12 weeks as he undergoes an operation that will keep him out of action for a few months, so there’s no doubting he’ll be leaving everything out there on the oche.
However, I feel with each long format match he’s playing, the harder it will become for 'The Asp' and the more the injury will come to the fore. Wade is far too experienced and won’t have any sympathy for Asp out there if he’s suffering. He’ll stick to playing his own game and I just feel if he can keep the pressure on Asp with solid scoring, good timing and solid doubles then he’ll eventually break him down.
If you look at recent averages - Wade has the upper hand, in his last 14 matches he’s averaged 100+ in six of these and 98+ in nine of them. Aspinall on the other hand hasn’t averaged 100+ in any of his last 14 matches and has averaged below 90 in seven of his last 13 matches. Wade recently beat Asp on the Pro Tour a couple weeks ago and I think 5/6 for him to repeat the feat is the best value of the night.
Luke Humphries to beat Stephen Bunting @ 3/10
What can you say about 'Cool Hand’s' performance on Saturday night? Absolutely phenomenal. He had everything - 108.76 average, six 180s and 59% on doubles. Ricardo Pietreczko averaged 101 and couldn’t lay a glove on him. If he plays near that tonight then there can only be one winner.
Bunting faces a daunting task tonight but he did play well himself to come through a much more stressful test against Ryan Joyce in the first round - he had to go deep, eventually winning 12-10 with a 97.42 average, hitting 44% of his doubles, which he could do with repeating or even improving to compete here. They’ve played four times this year with two wins piece, and Bunting does have a solid record against Humphries, only trailing 7-5 in previous meetings.
I just think this is a great opportunity for Luke now, his eyes will have lit up seeing Littler’s departure from the event last night and Cool Hand is the man to beat now and will look to kick on.
He was outstanding at the World Cup for England and followed that up with Saturday’s performance, he hasn’t won the Matchplay yet so will put everything into it. Bunting has only made the QF stage once in nine appearances at the Winter Gardens, I can’t see him making it for a second time tonight.
The Bullet has only averaged 100+ in two of his last 14 matches, in my view he needs to achieve that tonight to have a realistic chance of winning, so the odds are stacked against him. Happy to add Humphries to the double at 3/10, as I think he’s ready to tear it up this week.
