Market Rasen racecourse

With six meetings taking place across Britain and Ireland on Thursday, there is lots of racing to enjoy. Among the offering is a jumps card from Market Rasen, where there are seven races from 13.58-17.03 on ground forecast to be good.

I've picked out a trio to follow at the Lincolnshire venue in my Market Rasen tips, including the Patrick Neville-trained Magical Hill who is open to plenty of improvement on his handicap hurdle debut.

Market Rasen Tips

  • 14:58 – Shibuya Song @ 9/1
  • 15:58 – Magical Hill @ 3/1
  • 16:28 – Post Chaise @ 11/8

14:58 – Shibuya Song @ 9/1

SHIBUYA SONG didn’t get further than the third flight on her hurdles debut at Hereford in December and showed little over the same course and distance a month later. There have been some small signs of improvement recently, however, and better is expected here.

Her last two starts in maiden hurdles at Stratford were much more promising and she stayed on despite being outpaced when last seen. Making her handicap debut here, an opening mark of 83 looks workable and she can progress in this sphere.

The Richard Phillips-trained mare placed over 2m on the Flat and the step up to an extended 2m4f could suit on that evidence. It’s unlikely we’ve seen the best of her over hurdles and this looks a good opportunity for her to get off the mark.

15:58 – Magical Hill @ 3/1

The feature race on the card is this Class 3 0-125 handicap hurdle over an extended 2m4f and Dan Skelton’s Notnowlinda is likely to prove popular with punters. There was no real excuse for her defeat in a weaker race at Hereford last time though and she looks opposable.

Patrick Neville’s MAGICAL HILL is the one to side with and arrives with a 2-2 record in novice hurdles.

The son of Kingston Hill made all the running when winning at Huntingdon on his first start over hurdles and the result never looked in doubt. While the form is a bit of a mixed bag, the horse back in seventh has boosted it by winning since.

Magical Hill produced an even smarter performance when upped to 2m5f at Kelso next time. A 7lb penalty proved to be no problem and he scooted clear to win by six lengths. An opening mark of 116 could be generous and another big run is anticipated.

16:28 – Post Chaise @ 11/8

POST CHAISE has a consistent record over fences, including four wins from ten starts. He came close to making it five at Southwell last time and a 2lb rise for that effort looks fair.

The son of Shirocco has had three runs at Market Rasen and won both his chase starts here. He has to prove his stamina for this 3m31/2f trip but the better ground will help and he’s definitely worth giving a go in this company.
