Southwell Racecourse Jumps

There are four Tuesday meetings taking place across Britain and Ireland, jumps cards come from Southwell and Sligo, while they race on the Flat at Salisbury and Wetherby.

It's a busy day, with all four meetings boasting eight races. We've got three fancies to follow, including a chasing newcomer that presents Nico de Boinville with his only ride of the afternoon at Southwell.

Horse Racing Tips Tuesday

  • 19:00 Wetherby - John L Sullivan @ 4/1

Horse Racing Odds

14:45 Southwell - Hyland @ 9/4

This is traditionally a time when jumps jockeys are lesser spotted, with many of the stars of the National Hunt world now on summer recess. Eager for winners, the search goes on over the summer months, albeit minus the pressure of the Grade 1 cauldron.

Nico de Boinville is enjoying a good time of it lately, with five winners from 13 rides across the last month for a strike-rate of 38 per cent. He's at Southwell for one ride, getting the leg up on HYLAND for his boss Nicky Henderson, and that is worth heeding.

Hyland won four times in 15 starts over hurdles, making the frame on a further five occasions and achieving a peak rating of 135 in that discipline.
He hasn't won since October but faced difficult challenges at Ascot and Cheltenham in the spring, latterly in the Pertemps Final at the Festival, and was in good tune when second at Warwick (3m1f, good) in late April behind a well-handicapped rival that won again next time.

Southwell is a good jumping test and so it's encouraging that Henderson is starting out over fences here as the schooling must have gone well.

16:37 Salisbury - Steel Tiger @ 5/2

Simon & Ed Crisford will be eager to see their €110,000 Almanzor colt STEEL TIGER opening his account via the Madar Corporation Maiden Stakes over a mile-and-a-half at Salisbury.

Both his runs thus far have come at Yarmouth over just shy of this trip and have yielded runner-up finishes in small fields. He bumped into a previous winner in Moon Over Miami on debut, shaping with plenty of promise, and then did likewise next time when Nottingham debut winner Theory Of Tides had his measure. The latter holds a Group 1 entry for the Gosdens.

Steel Tiger gets the service of champion jockey William Buick now and has excellent claims now taking his chance in maiden company.

19:00 Wetherby - John L Sullivan @ 4/1

The lightly-raced JOHN L SULLIVAN is taken to make his mark for Lucinda Russell in the TL Dallas Insurance Handicap over a mile at Wetherby. The gelding was making just his fourth start in April when he ran over C&D (soft) on handicap bow and improved to finish second.

He ran into a handicap blot there, with the winner Good Morning Alex 2-2 since and now rated 17lb higher. The beaten horses have also held up the form, with fourth home Havana Prince 2-2 since at Ripon and the fifth, sixth and eighth home all winners since.

Oisin Orr's partner is rated 2lb higher for this return to Wetherby and should have more to come.
