Six UK and Irish meetings make up the midweek quota on Wednesday, with Yarmouth amongst them.

The seaside venue hosts a six-race afternoon card on the Flat, with action running from 14:30-17:05 and ground conditions forecast to be 'good-good to firm in places'. We've selected a trio of runners to follow on the card, including one for in-form champion jockey William Buick.

Great Yarmouth Tips: Wednesday, May 22

  • 14:30 – Smart Charger @ 5/2
  • 16:30 – Master Dandy @ 11/1
  • 17:05 – Specialist View @ 7/2

14:30 – Smart Charger @ 5/2

Champion jockey William Buick has made a fine start to the season on turf and he arrives into this meeting boasting a 22 percent strike-rate across the previous month (18-81), whilst his record at Yarmouth across the last five seasons is even more impressive, standing at almost 25 percent (34-137) and showing a level stakes profit of +43.61 in that timeframe.

Buick has a good book of rides on this card and can get out of the blocks in the opener on board SMART CHARGER for trainer Alan King.

The gelded son of Saxon Warrior was formerly trained by Tony Carroll for whom he was a seven-race maiden. His first start for this handler came at Southwell last month when he was well backed before finishing second over 1m4f, unable to thwart the winner, Red Dwarf, but coming well clear of the remaining 10 runners.

He should be fitter after that first run since October and could have more to offer now tackling this increased trip and he is fancied to shed his maiden tag under Buick, who also boasts a 34 percent strike-rate when teaming up with this trainer.

A field of 10 are set to contest this 7f handicap and it's a tight-knit affair on paper, with just 4lb separating the field on official ratings.

Ex-Tom Clover inmate Rogue Soldier is one to note on debut for James Owens, while top-weight Red Maids is another likely contender on the day for Buick, but lightly-raced turf debutant MASTER DANDY has enough going for him on paper to be worth siding with.

The four-year-old gelding was placed on debut at Southwell in May last year over 6f and defied an absence of 188 days to win at Newcastle in novice company over that same trip in November.

He was second-best under a penalty at Wolverhampton over 5f in January before failing to shine on handicap bow back at Gosforth Park in February off an opening mark of 77 with a claimer on board.

Ross Coakley returns in the plate now and the assessor has dropped Master Dandy 4lb ahead of this turf bow. James Fanshawe has his team in cracking form and this gelding could be nicely treated if taking well to the grass.

The closing contest is over a mile and SPECIALIST VIEW gets the vote in an open-looking affair for trainer Chris Dwyer with Silvestre De Sousa in the saddle.

This Expert Eye filly was a big improver on penultimate start when scoring at Southwell over this trip under De Sousa in good fashion, justifying strong market support.

After that clear-cut win, she was expected to double up at Wolverhampton this month but a tardy start led to her racing keenly in rear before struggling to make an impact at the end of the race.

That run is forgiven and the promise of the previous Southwell success is enough to believe a first turf win is within reach.
