Hungary vs Switzerland Bet Builder Tips: 17/2 shout for Group A clash

The first game of Saturday’s Euro 2024 action sees Hungary take on Switzerland in Cologne. With kick-off at 14:00, both sides will be looking to get their campaigns off to winning starts, in this evenly-matched contest. 

If we look at Group A, Germany are the clear favourites to win the group on home soil, while these two and Scotland are expected to battle it out for the other qualifying places. That makes this battle a huge one as two nations with genuine hopes of making it to the last 16 and beyond go head-to-head.

Hungary to win

Hungary are priced at 12/5 to win this match, which I think offers excellent value given the state of the two teams right now. I would pick Hungary to win this match as a single given the odds, so adding it to our Bet Builder makes perfect sense. 

Marco Rossi is now in charge of Hungary, and he helped them top their qualification group ahead of Serbia, going eight games undefeated with five wins and three losses. Admittedly, it was a relatively easy group, but Hungary have now lost just once in their last 20 matches.

That was a friendly match recently against the Republic of Ireland, but competitively, they have been one of the better teams in Europe. They beat Germany and hammered England in the Nations League in 2022 and look like they will be strong again in this tournament. 

They should be able to beat a Switzerland outfit who are decent, but didn’t have the best qualification campaign. They finished second to Romania, and only just edged out Israel, while they have a habit of flopping at major tournaments. I’m happy to back an in-form Hungary side who know how to get the job done to win their opening match. 

Barnabas Varga to score

Hungary have been looking for a goalscoring number nine to compliment the rest of the team, and while all eyes may be on star midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai, another name could shine at Euro 2024. Barnabas Varga has only forced his way into the starting XI recently, but now he is ready to take the tournament by storm. 

The 29-year-old has been in sparkling form over the past few years, and is finally getting the recognition he deserves having battled through Hungary’s lower leagues. Last season he got his big move to Ferencvaros and he’s bagged 20 goals in 24 league matches since his arrival. For his country, he has also been excellent, scoring six goals in 11 international games, and giving Hungary an extra dimension moving forward. He can start, and score here.

I think this game will be an entertaining one, and we can expect a decent number of corners. Hungary like to get their shots away, while Switzerland also aren’t shy going forward, so although nerves will be apparent, I believe we will see a decent number of corners from two physical sides.
