In what will be Serbia’s first ever participation at the European Championships as an independent nation, many eyes will be on the Eagles as they look to mount a surprise charge for the knockout stages.

Another disappointing World Cup campaign saw Serbia crash out of Qatar at the group stage with just a single point, sending manager Dragan Stojkovic back to the drawing board.

Their attacking talents saw the Eagles score five goals over the course of their three group matches - better than any other side in Group G - but the eight they conceded was enough to undo their good work as they finished bottom of their section, below Brazil, Switzerland and Cameroon.

Serbia looked strong in both attack and defence for large swathes of their qualification campaign as 14 points, 15 goals scored and nine conceded was enough to send the Eagles to Germany in second place behind Hungary.

Serbia have been drawn into a somewhat favourable group as a tricky meeting with England is evened out by perceivably winnable ties against Denmark and Slovenia.

While they have never reached the knockout stages of a major tournament as Serbia - with their last appearance past the group stages coming in Euro 2000 as FR Yugoslavia - the Eagles could be able to grab at least one victory in the group stage, which in turn could be enough to qualify as one of the best third placed teams at the very least.

Stage of elimination - Last 16 @ 11/8 

If Serbia are to progress past the group stages, a difficult round-of-16 tie is almost a certainty and could spell the end of their party in Germany.

A meeting with the hosts could be in store should they finish second while qualifying in third could see them face any one of Portugal, Belgium or Spain, and the expectation will be that the quality of those opponents would prove too much for the Eagles.

The Eagles are blessed with an array of attacking quality including the likes of Juventus star Dusan Vlahovic and AC Milan striker Luka Jovic, but their danger man is likely to be Al Hilal’s Aleksandar Mitrovic.

The former Fulham striker scored two of Serbia’s five goals in Qatar, netted five times in qualifying for the Eagles and is also Serbia’s all-time top goalscorer with 58 from 91 appearances.
