With tennis' showpiece event - Wimbledon - just around the corner, what better time to run through exactly how to bet on tennis online with Betfred?

As with other sports, there are multiple competitions and markets to bet on, which can all be a tad confusing, especially if you're new to tennis or betting. So, below, we at Betfred Insights Education have prepared a handy guide on how to bet on tennis online with Betfred, explaining how it all works.

What tennis events can I bet on?

There are four Grand Slam tournaments in tennis - the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open - all of which take place at various points of the year and are available to bet on with Betfred.

The Grand Slams are overseen by the ITF (International Tennis Federation) rather than the separate women's and men's tour organising bodies, the WTA (Women's Tennis Association) and ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals), who organise the WTA Tour and ATP Tour respectively, which both put on numerous events throughout the year which can be bet on with Betfred.

You can bet on the outright winner of each event - ie Carlos Alcaraz to win the Wimbledon Men's Singles at 11/8, or Naomi Osaka to win the Wimbledon Women's Singles at 9/1 - or on individual matches, where markets include games and sets.

Betting on games in tennis

In the games section on Betfred, you can bet on the total number of games - how many you think will be played in the whole match (over/under) - and whether there will be an even or odd number of games.

There are also game handicaps, so if you back Novak Djokovic on a -2.5 game handicap and he wins by at least three games, your bet will be a winner.

You can also bet on how many games you think there will be in a set, so over or under 10.5 in set 2. If you backed over 10.5 games in set 2 and there were at least 11, your bet would be a winner, but if there were only 10 at most, the bet would lose.

Betting on sets in tennis

On Betfred, you can bet on which player will win each set - ie set 1 or set 2 - as well as the correct score of each set. So, you could back Djokovic to win set 1, or you can bet on him to win set 1 6-0, 6-4, or 6-1, and so on.

You can also wager on set betting, so Djokovic to win 2-1 - meaning he wins two sets and his opponent wins one.

There is also a set handicap market, so if you think Djokovic wins by two clear sets, you can back him on a -1.5 set handicap.

In-play tennis

Betfred also has a number of in-play markets on tennis, including current/next game winner and point winner. These can be more beneficial for bettors as you can analyse everything that has happened before in the match and how recent events have unfolded, and make an even more informed decision on imminent actions.

What else do I need to know?

The various tournaments have different rules, so it pays to be aware of each individual competition and how many sets are required to win. For example, in the Wimbledon Men's Singles, players must win three sets to be crowned overall winner of a match, whereas in the Wimbledon Women's Singles, players only have to win two sets to triumph.

Men are not always required to win three sets, however, as ATP events are best of three sets, meaning players only have to win two.
